FALKIRK COMMEMORATION 2010
The Falkirk Commemoration 2010 took place on Saturday the 17th of July this year and was very well attended by people of all ages.

The weather stayed dry much to everyone's relief and although windy at least all the banners on display fluttered wonderfully in the Scottish sky.

Various speakers told us of Wallace and the battle of Falkirk, wreaths were laid on behalf of various groups including ourselves. Lachlan McCann had the honour this year ably assisted by the lovely Amber.

The proceeding started off at the Kirk where members of Crann Tara, Siol nan Gaidheal, The Society of William Wallace, The Strathleven Artisans, The Knights Templar, The Scottish National Party, Falkirk Historical Society and The Men of Bute all paid their respects to the brave souls buried there.

Then we marched through the town of Falkirk led by The Denny and Dunipace pipe band and society member Gordon Aitken.

Camelon Outdoor Bowling Club was once again the place to be in Falkirk as we were entertained by the wonderful Fiery Jack and Gaelic singer Joy Dunlop who gave us a fantastic evening of Scottish music and dance!!

As the evening wore on and after we'd had our fill of stovies and pies we had some speakers come onstage to let everyone know why were there, Wallace was very much on the agenda as was David R Ross, everyone spoke from the heart and the assembled throng made everyone relax and enjoy the experience of speaking in public.

Society member Gordon Aitken sang his new composition dedicated to David and everyone sang along. Fiery Jack came on to finish the evening in the only way they know how.

All in all a great day, big thank you to all the folk behind the scenes for making sure both William Wallace and David R Ross will never be forgotten.

I was asked if I'd like to say a few words at night in the hall, and there was only one thing to talk about David R Ross!!

Last weekend I was in North Carolina attending the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games.
I was there representing the Society of William Wallace as we’ve just launched an American branch of the Society and things are looking very promising!!

While there I was really impressed by how much knowledge they  had in all things Scottish.
Ninety percent of the questions I was asked though were about David, some people had only just heard of his passing at these games and they were justifiably shocked and upset
People spoke so passionately about what David had told them and how he inspired them to go and read not just his books but books he’d recommend to them.
We all knew David was doing this kind of stuff but it’s not until you go over there and see the result of David’s hard work that you really begin to appreciate it.
They had their own tribute to David on the final night of the games, Albannach were closing the show, and before they played we heard David’s voice come over the PA system.

Behold, I see my Father, I see my Mother,
I see my Sisters and my brothers,
I see the bloodline go back through the days of Bruce and Wallace to the very first Scot.
They call to me, and one day I will join them in the land of Tir Na Nog where the heroes and patriots of Scotland live forever!!

You could have heard a pin drop!! The point is David can pop into your mind at any time.

My wife was recently in Florida where she told me she was reading one of David’s books and because he’s the only author that she actually knew it was as if he was in bed beside her reading the book to her!!

That’s a mental image I’ve been unable to get out of my head.

Not long after he died I was at Glasgow Airport working, some of you may know I’m a driver for the Post Office and I was emptying the Pillar Box in the main terminal.

Across from the box is a charity team who encourage holiday makers to part with some cash for worthwhile causes, one month its Oxfam then its Quarriers Village then Barnados but it’s always the same girls.
Anyway one of the lassies, a rather attractive one at that came up to me and asked me if I’d heard about the big Scottish guy that died.

I asked her to be more specific and she explained that she lived in East Kilbride as did the big Scottish guy he was blonde six foot five....... Then the penny dropped, Davie.

I told her that I did in fact know David and we waxed lyrical about him for a while.
Turned out she had dated him as well and she told me a story of her first date with him, he picked her up in this big Mercedes Benz convertible with the top down and tooted the horn when he arrived at her house.

She came down the path but realised she’d forgotten something and turned round to go back for it, as she turned David shouted after her, NICE ARSE!!

She told me she was slightly embarrassed and didn’t expect something like that on her first date, I told her that it was typical Davie and he wouldn’t have meant any real offence.

She made her excuses to leave me and said, I’d better get back or the girls will start shouting at me.
As she turned to walk away I couldn’t help myself, I shouted to her, the Big Yin wasn’t wrong sweetheart, NICE ARSE!! She blushed, smiled and said thanks.

I couldn’t help but think Big David was standing there beside me laughing his head off.

So just beware he crops up in some very strange places.

Ladies and Gentlemen, if you have a glass nearby I’d like to propose a toast to the Big Warmer.
